Connie and Carrie and Their Fabulous Trip to Honduras

Connie (left) and Carrie (right) visiting Compassion’s Child Survival Program in Honduras.

Hello, fellow MOPS moms! Allow us to introduce ourselves:

I’m Connie, the mom of an 8-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, and the wife of a husband who is a very hands-on daddy.

And I’m Carrie, mom of three girls: ages 7, 5, and 2, the new mom of a son we recently adopted from China, and the wife of an extremely supportive daddy.

Remember the contest Compassion International invited MOPS groups to enter last year — for the chance to win a trip to Honduras to visit the moms and babies of the Pacto con Dios Child Survival Program?

Well, we won! We had the incredible opportunity to travel to Honduras with Compassion and it was an absolutely life-changing experience. Check out this beautiful video from our trip:

“Standing for other moms around the world who have great needs — it is just the perfect relationship.”

As a new sponsor with Compassion, I didn’t really understand the impact my commitment was having on families suffering from extreme poverty. Boy, did this trip open my eyes to the ways God is working in poor communities around the world!

Seeing the love, dedication and hard work of the Child Survival Program staff and hearing the mom’s heart-touching testimonies were awe-inspiring. It was also amazing to see how these moms had the same hopes and dreams for their children that we have for our kids!

Here are my top five takeaways from the trip:

  1. Compassion is literally saving lives every single day — with the help of people like you and me!
  2. Compassion addresses the whole person, in both mom and child, including health, development, finances and spirituality.
  3. Compassion works to help children not just survive, but thrive.
  4. Compassion programs make a significant difference in their entire community.
  5. I am not powerless over the suffering of children living in extreme poverty.

Since the trip, I have never felt more empowered! I got this message loud and clear —my action or inaction has a ripple effect that touches the lives of moms, just like me, all around the world.

“I relate. I see the moms here, and I see my kids in their kids.”

I was so busy, I wondered if I’d ever be able to live out my passion for vulnerable moms and babies. But God saw me. He saw my heart. And He fulfilled His promise to me — that I would have the opportunity to bring hope to moms and babies around the world. And it changed my life!

While it was heartbreaking to see beautiful, strong people in Honduras face so many challenges — like simply trying to survive — it gave me hope to see Compassion in action. Compassion is the real deal, working in the poorest areas and allowing local churches to determine and address the needs of that specific community. In this center, we saw work being done in the areas of education, early intervention for development, health and nutrition, life skills and healthy relationships. Plus, families were learning the truth of Jesus!

I’ve been a Compassion sponsor since I was 18-years-old, but to see the program in action was truly humbling. I saw moms who are doing their very best and dreaming of a future for their families. I’m thrilled to be able to report that the work being done really is life-changing, culture-honoring, gospel-centered, and is improving the lives of moms and children across the globe.

Because God sees me, and sees my heart, I had the ability to tell those beautiful moms face-to-face — moms just like us — that I see them and that God sees them.

I like to believe the moms in Honduras saw God in us, too.

Together, we invite you to stand with us for these incredible moms, and show them that you see them, too. Compassion makes it super easy, so let’s act now!
